Why do so many people say the E36 is unreliable? What the f are they talking about?

I had two of them before, both purchased used, and I never had any issues.

I think the E36 is one of the best affordable cars you can buy today.

I'm sorry.

I guess it was your fate cause you're pretty well known on FP and Oppo and it gives you extra writing material!

Maybe I just got luxury. I didn't have either car for very long.

The first one I only had for a year cause I moved abroad for a bit. Then when I got back I bought the same year and model car in blue.

I had the blue one for about 2-3 years before I sold it when I was short on the down payment for a condo

That is awesome!

Mine were 94 325is cars. One was purchased in 99 for about $14K and the other in 2000 for about $12K. You couldn't get them for $800 back then...

Which is another thing I don't get about what people say. A lot of people talk crap on E36 seats. I found them very comfortable too.

I took a 10 hour trip and back with minimal stops with no aches. I once leased a newer Merc and couldn't handle more than 1.5 hours of driving without stopping because the seats hurt my back so badly.

lol

i loved that blue too

what really sucks is that i had spent time and money modding the car and lost everything i put into it. and the money i did get went to waste. i did make money on that condo but i sold it and put the profit into my last house, which i'm trying to sell now and taking a bath on.

so basically the E36 was sacrificed for nothing :( i would have been better off keeping the car and renting

yeah, i just wish i had not been so bone headed and dumped the profits from that condo into another place at the peak of the market in 2005

the funny thing is that i sold the condo in 2004 cause i felt that bubble was about to pop. but then my dad convinced me that i was wrong and i bought again.

life lesson - always trust your instinct!

noted sir, i'm shopping around for a home at the moment. It's my first home and Iam loathing the process. Working 7-7 doesn't help anything lol :]

Nice.

Feel free to use the simple rule I created when buying a place. Compare the total annual cost of owning it to renting something similar. If owning costs you no more than 30% more then it's probably safe.

If it costs you 40% or higher more to own then it's a bad deal

well at my price range, renting will undoubtedly win for sure lol. :]

How much more a year will renting be?

Make sure to factor in tax write offs from owning

I've yet to make the calculation. Thanks for that tip though, much much appreciated sit

no prob!

another tip: a shortcut is to use the redfin site. it has a calculator that does everything but the tax write off for you. just make sure to put in a realistic mortgage rate and monthly cost for maintenance. sometimes their estimated mortgage rate is too high and their monthly maintenance allotment is always WAY too high
